Documenting China: Contemporary Photography
and Social Change

Programming Ideas

  • AP Comparative Government and Politics classes in Holland, MI, had a lot to think about after visiting this exhibition. They were asked thought-provoking questions about the images, such as "does the photography depict public or private lives?," and "what images of "communism" and "democracy" do you see?" Documenting China was on view at the Depree Art Center and Gallery at Hope College.
  • The San Francisco Public Library system held an extensive number of programs and lectures related to the exhibition, including: "Chinese Stereotypes and Diversity: What's the Real China?," "Contemporary Chinese and Chinese American Literature," "Wonders of Chinese Music: Performance and Talk by Melody of China," and "Southern China: Crafts Workshop for Children." Lonely Planet travel guide author, Carolyn Heller also presented a slide talk on visiting China and its most popular tourist centers. Other well-known authors and Chinese scholars spoke about myriad topics that related to area's large Chinese American community.

Visitor Comments

  • "This is true life in the Chinese countryside. I really enjoyed this."
    —Ning Chan Aguirre
  • "Captivating, extraordinary, thank you."
    Frank R. Pina
  • "Touching, emotional. These pictures brought tears to my eyes. People living in the city don't have an idea what's going on in the harsh suburb. I've never been to a steel factory: now these pictures tell the scary and sad reality of the factory workers' conditions." —W. Chen
  • "A refreshingly honest view of contemporary China—a glimpse into working lives." —A. Johns
  • "Thank you for your exhibit. I hope it opens endless eyes and minds to the seriousness and hard times of other people's lives. My heart truly goes out to the people." —Calina H.
