In the 17th round of the Smithsonian Community Grant program, sponsored by MetLife Foundation, we received 20 applications from 19 venues in 14 states requesting a total of $95,920 in support of programming for 15 SITES exhibitions. For this round, the panel chose to award full and partial funding to 11 of the 20 applicants. To date, SITES has awarded $671,088 to 139 different organizations in 42 states serving 3,168,231 people!

 

Washington State Historical Society in Tacoma, WA for $5,000

To fund the actors, directors, script copyright fee, and the marketing of "Ghosts of the Great Hall: Black Wings", a facilitated tour for school children. Additionally, monies will support a presenter and the marketing of a Martin Luther King Jr. Day program focused on African American contributions to aviation history. All programming relate to the themes of Black Wings: American Dreams of Flight.

Gari Melchers Home and Studio at the University of Mary Washington in Fredericksburg, VA for $5,000

To fund the honorarium and travel for a speaker, musician, and storyteller; the printing of 1,000 family guides; free admission for area students and members of the public; and the advertisement for three public programs related to the themes of William H. Johnson: An American Modern.

City of Las Cruces/Las Cruces Museum of Art in Las Cruces, NM for $5,000

To fund travel and honorariums for several speakers, a photography instructor, and a performer/storyteller. Monies will also support education supplies and marketing for various public programs related to the themes of NASA | ART: 50 Years of Exploration.

Park City Historical Society and Museum in Park City, UT for $5,000

To fund honoraria and travel for speakers; a videographer; supplies for a family day; free admission for school tours and members of the public; admission and transportation to an after school program for Latino students; and the marketing and advertising for programming related to themes of Bittersweet Harvest: The Bracero Program, 1942-1964.

Sonoma County Museum in Santa Rosa, CA for $5,000

To fund honoraria for five panelists; supplies, materials and participant contract fees for a family day; and hands-on activity supplies and design/printing for a docent guide for tours of Singgalot: The Ties that Bind.

Library of Virginia Foundation in Richmond, VA for $5,000

To fund a workshop and lecture related to the themes of American Letterpress: The Art of Hatch Show Print. Specific items funded will be the fee and travel expenses for the exhibition curator; supplies for the workshop; videotaping and editing of the lecture; and the advertising and marketing of the lecture and workshop.

Northwest African American Museum in Seattle, WA for $5,000

To fund "Sharing Stories", a public program developed in partnership with the Native Youth Enrichment Program which will bring community members together for a discussion about food, identity, and health. Specifically it will fund marketing outreach, honoraria for four speakers, 15 complimentary copies of the exhibition catalogues for students, and program supplies. All programming relate to themes of IndiVisible: African-Native American Lives in the Americas.

Yale Peabody Museum of Natural History in New Haven, CT for $4,500

To fund a puppet show, a bilingual puppet show script, advertising, and various materials and supplies for public programs related to X-Ray Vision: Fish Inside and Out.

Charlotte Museum of History in Charlotte, NC for $4,000

To fund the Philippine Cultural Legacy Project that will help support educational initiatives produced in conjunction with Singgalot: The Ties that Bind. Items supported will be the speaker honoraria and advertising for public programming.
