To support an outreach program, linked to These Rare Lands, that will consist of two segments. The first is a series of weekly lectures about artist Stan Jorstad and hands-on activities offered to schools, civic and community groups as well as the general public during the week and on weekends at scheduled times. The second program is a one day campus-wide event, Celebrate the Arts, where visitors can travel to art stations throughout the campus. As groups move from one building to another they have the opportunity to participate in lectures, computer activities, painting, drawing, and sculpture workshops related to the exhibition. |

Lunch Box Memories
Received $5,000
To plan, market, and implement exhibit based tours related to Lunch Box Memories, offer make-and-take art projects, and to support transportation to the Museum from regional schools. The tours, which are designed primarily for schoolchildren, are correlated to the Virginia Standards of Learning. Teachers region-wide will receive marketing information; those committing to participation will receive a Teacher’s Packet containing pre-and post-visit activities. ARTrageous Kids, a hands-on creativity nook for young children located in the Museum, will carry a lunchbox nutrition theme throughout the exhibit. Using two lunch boxes, plastic foods, and food pyramid graphics, children will be guided to good nutritional choices for their lunches. A Lunch Box Memories FamilyFest will include a children’s art workshop experimenting with colors inside a lunch box, a pop culture “show and tell” with speaker, a lunch box type meal, and a showing of film clips related to the exhibit. |

In Search of Giant Squid
Received $5,000
To assist with the production of two free public events and an interactive Discovery Cart within the In Search of Giant Squid exhibition. Intended for a family audience, the Opening Day event will include a public lecture by Dr. Clyde Roper, an interactive mixed-media mural, and ongoing demonstrations/activities at the Discovery Cart. The second event, during Museum Nights, will target a university audience and include a lecture by Dr. David Pawson, a Science Movie Night presentation of 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea with a discussion by Dr. Pawson, Discovery Cart demonstrations and activities, and an “Oh, So Squidly” fashion show. The Discovery Cart, Squid A La Cart, will be designed to supplement the exhibition by providing hands-on activities, props and direct interaction with paid and volunteer staff. In addition to their public lectures and participation in demonstrations/activities, Dr. Roper will conduct an exhibition training session for all paid and volunteer staff and Dr. Pawson will be presenting a seminar to university students and faculty on sea urchins and hybridization in the sea. |

Doodles, Drafts, and Designs: Industrial Drawings from the Smithsonian
Received $5,000
To support marketing outreach for Doodles, Drafts, and Designs and fund related educational programming. On Doodles Day in Pasadena:Inspiration Can Strike Anywhere at Any Time! 10,000 paper “Napkin Flyers” and accompanying placards will be distributed to local restaurants to celebrate the creative spirit of Pasadena; napkins with doodles can be turned in to the Museum for free exhibition admission in the month of February. Doodles Day in Pasadena lesson plans will be distributed in public and private schools. On Free Day, Doodle Away! guided tours of the exhibit will be followed by art demonstrations that show how doodling can unlock creativity. A community arts information table will share information about local classes for youth and adults that will help hone your drawing and design abilities. Just For Teachers: The Innovating Classroom will offer educators a tour of Doodles, Drafts, and Designs, sample viewing of DVDs on innovation, invention and design, techniques for teaching about graphic primary documents, a presentation on historic artists’ tools, and a presentation by graphic artist Jon Pearson on using drawing to reach critical thinking goals in the classroom. A series of lectures will also be offered covering topics from hot air balloons to local inventors to drawing. |

Burgess Shale: Evolution’s Big Bang Received $2,500
To hold a one-day educational event in conjunction with The Burgess Shale: Evolution’s Big Bang. Called “Burgess Shale Community Day,” this event will invite Oklahomans of all ages to meet the wild and wonderful creatures that lived in the ancient oceans of the world. In addition to providing a new, interactive event for the community, “Burgess Shale Community Day” will provide insight into the incredible fossil diversity present in the exhibit and help visitors gain an understanding of the significance of Burgess Shale’s evidence of early life on earth. During the event six activity stations will allow visitors to become actively involved with the exhibit and learn about the concepts and evolutionary implications of the Burgess Shale. |

Covered Bridges: Spanning the American Landscape

To conduct special programming in conjunction with Covered Bridges: Spanning the American Landscape. To be held during Pennsylvania’s annual covered bridge week celebration, this collaborative programming will include a reception and lecture by the authors of Pennsylvania’s Covered Bridges – A Complete Guide; the printing of a Pennsylvania map showing the locations of all extant Pennsylvania covered bridges, and a field trip for secondary students to covered bridges located in the central Pennsylvania region led by State Museum and Pennsylvania Department of Transportation staff. All programming will focus on the history, construction, and preservation of covered bridges. |

Latin Jazz: la combinación perfecta / The Perfect Combination

For educational programming to supplement the Latin Jazz: la combinación perfecta/ The Perfect Combination exhibition. The Museum’s objective is to provide an avenue for better and more complete understanding of the Latin Jazz musical genre, as well as provide an avenue for students and adults to express themselves artistically through dance. Groups will view the exhibition and get to take part in a Latin dance class taught by a professional dance instructor from a local university. Students will be instructed on traditional Latin dances such as the samba, the salsa, the meringue, and the tango. The instructor will incorporate topics from the Latin Jazz exhibition into her dance classes, including how to make connections between dance and other disciplines, and how to understand dance as a way to create and communicate meaning. |
