American Presidency: A Glorious Burden
Received $5,000

To implement educational programs to accompany American Presidency: A Glorious Burden. Specifically, the Society will implement four activities that support visitors’ attempts to understand how the office of the Presidency shaped Oregon and how Oregon politics helped to shape the Presidency. These activities include an Eleanor Roosevelt living history re-enactor, the production of a documentary film entitled Oregonians and the Presidency, and discussion/lecture programs with noted historians.

To support two presentations by Civil Rights historian Taylor Branch as part of exhibition-related programming for 381 Days: The Montgomery Bus Boycott Story. One program will target adults and the other will target middle- and high-school students.

To sponsor three sets of public programs in conjunction with In Focus: National Geographic Greatest Portraits. These public programs include: opening day activities for both members and the general public; two children’s photography workshops; and an adult photography workshop.

In Search of Giant Squid
Received $5,000

To create Cephalopod Science Lab , a discovery station, and to host October is for Octopods & Squid, a month-long event focused on In Search of Giant Squid. The discovery station will engage both children and adults in hands-on learning about squid. Other program elements include: informal interactions with daily visitors; standards-based activities for school groups; summer camp explorations; after-school programs; toddler story times; and life-long learning sessions for seniors. During the October is for Octopods & Squid event, the Aquarium will have lectures by Dr. Clyde Roper; a 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea film festival; Monster Madness children’s Halloween event with a squid theme; and a squid art festival.

Picturing the Century: One Hundred Years of Photography from the National Archives
Received $5,000

To design and implement a series of public programs to accompany Picturing the Century. The programs are designed to bring local relevance to the nationally significant collection of photographs included in the exhibition. The programs include: a lecture by the exhibition’s curator, a public tour of photography archives held by both the Museum and the Pacific Alaska Region office of the National Archives and Records Administration; a professional development workshop for K-12 educators; and a special outreach program for inner city youth in Seattle.

To partially fund an educational seminar to accompany Robert Rauschenberg, Artist-Citizen: Posters for a Better World and a student poster-design exhibit “STAND2006: Arkansas Collegiate Graphic Design Competitive.” These programs are designed to maximize student and faculty participation from around the state while highlighting the exhibition’s themes.

Wondrous Cold: An Antarctic Journey
Received $4,195

To create an Early Childhood Learning Area (ECLA) to complement Wondrous Cold: An Antarctic Journey. The area is designed to educate and entertain children between the ages of two and five by engaging them in learning activities. Different stations will offer a variety of experiences on topics including science, math, geography, and language to reach a wide range of developmental stages and satisfy different learning styles. Each station will fit into the exhibition’s Antarctica-based theme by integrating concepts about its wildlife, environment, geography, and relevant scientific research.

Documenting China: Contemporary Photography and Social Change Received $5,000

To support a series of three films and a lecture on the social and economic changes in China over the past decade. In conjunction with Documenting China: Contemporary Photography and Social Change, this series of events will present a candid view of China in the 20th Century. The lecturer, a former China correspondent for the The Washington Post in the late 90s, will share his insight on the changing landscape of this rapidly growing economy and how these changes affect the people of China.

Booming Out: Mohawk Ironworkers Build New York

To support a series of pubic programs designed to enhance visitor exposure to the history and cultural traditions of the Native American population featured in Booming Out: Mohawk Iron Workers Build New York. Programs include: drumming, music, and dance performances; lectures/conversations; family workshops on traditional Mohawk craft; and book readings.
