To bring Joseph Bruchac, author of the novel Code Talkers: A Novel about the Navajo Marines of World War Two, to Kalamazoo for three speaking engagements in collaboration with the Kalamazoo Public Library and Kalamazoo Juvenile Home; to publicize Bruchac’s appearances; and to publicize the Native Words, Native Warriors exhibition to more than 324,500 Air Zoo, school, library, and area Indian tribe associates located primarily in Kalamazoo, Calhoun, Van Buren, and Allegan Counties.

In Focus: National Geographic Greatest Portraits

To support activities relating to In Focus: National Geographic Greatest Portraits including three photography workshops to accommodate a total of 75 children, an offering of 100 scholarships for underprivileged children to visit the SITES exhibit with a guided tour of the galleries, and a photography-related lecture for students and adults in which we expect 50-100 attendees.

Covered Bridges Spanning the American Landscape

To support educational materials and expand promotion related to Covered Bridges Spanning the American Landscape in order to increase public awareness of the historical and economic value of local bridges. The Historical Society will have an accompanying exhibit of local covered bridge history as well as three guest lecturers, all authorities on aspects of Ohio covered bridges. A children’s ‘Bridge Builders’ workshop will take place where children will tour the exhibits and have an opportunity to build a model of a covered bridge.

Earth from Space
$5,000

To implement a print advertising campaign in newspapers in the Floyd, Polk and Bartow county areas and to produce and distribute fliers to be displayed in local businesses in promotion of Earth from Space and to provide transportation to local school students who may not otherwise have an opportunity to experience a Smithsonian exhibit.
