Covered Bridges: Spanning the American Landscape

Knights Ferry Bridge (1864), Knights Ferry, Stanislaus County, California

During the Gold Rush in the 1860s, covered bridges were built to carry prospectors into the mountains of California. As many as 100 wagons may have crossed the Knights Ferry Bridge each day as they traveled the Stockton-Sonora Road through the southern Sierras.
