Three-Toed
Sloth and Baby
The three-toed sloth, Bradypus infuscatus, is an example of an
extreme specialist, eating only leaves of a few, select tropical trees.
Leaves are difficult to digest, low in nutrients, and high in defensive
toxins, a combination of characteristics that results in slow metabolic
rates and sedentary lifestyles in leaf-eating specialists.
