More Than Words: Illustrated Letters from the Smithsonian's Archives of American Art
Mimi Gross to Renée (b. 1940) and Chaim Gross
6, 10 Aug. and 5 Sept. 1968
In a letter to her parents, Mimi Gross colorfully combines the verbal and the visual to describe a market day in Novi Pazar, a town in Serbia. She and her husband were mesmerized by the busy scene of merchants and their wares. Gross also explored medieval monasteries. “The mixed Byzantine [style] & attempts at individuality are so sensitive,” she notes, “it is impossible to feel it just from photos.” She added her version of a fresco from Sopacani of Eve in the paralyzing grip of a green serpent.
