More Than Words: Illustrated Letters from the Smithsonian's Archives of American Art
Paul Bransom (1885–1979) to Grace Bond
ca. 1905
Paul Bransom portrayed himself fixated on a photograph of his sweetheart, who was away in Boston rehearsing for a play. He wrote, “In my minds [sic] eye I can see Hollis street theater + the stage door so plainly. Oh! I wish I were there with you.” A year later, Bransom married Grace and sold five covers to The Saturday Evening Post, launching his career as a freelance illustrator.
