More Than Words: Illustrated Letters from the Smithsonian's Archives of American Art
Kenyon Cox (1865–1919) to his parents
7 Feb. 1877
In this letter, the painter and art critic Kenyon Cox complains about the lack of inspiration, suitable models, and opportunities for advancement at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. Instead, he makes a case for studying in Paris. Cox may have included this elaborately detailed drawing, an homage to Spanish artist Mariano Fortuny, to demonstrate his dedication and skill. Indeed, that fall, Cox made it to Paris, where he studied with Jean-Leon Gérôme.
