More Than Words: Illustrated Letters from the Smithsonian's Archives of American Art
John Sloan (1871-1951) to Antoinette M. Kraushaar
29 July 1945
In 1916, John Sloan began a long relationship with Kraushaar Gallery and its founder, John F. Kraushaar. In this letter to Kraushaar’s daughter, Sloan invites her to pick up a painting from the artist’s studio. He provides detailed instructions and sketches the storage racks so that Antoinette can easily locate the 1929 painting—Nude in the Bedroom. The piece was to be exhibited in the Philadelphia Press Exhibition at the Philadelphia Museum of Art in 1945.
