More Than Words: Illustrated Letters from the Smithsonian's Archives of American Art
Jim Nutt (b. 1938) to Don Baum
ca. 1969
Jim Nutt personalized this letter to a fellow artist with arresting images of “terrible things”— a menacing two-faced figure, wild hairs, lesions, vomit, and severed body parts. The letter recounted Nutt’s return to Sacramento and his attempt to get back into the “swing” of things. Nutt and his wife, artist Gladys Nilsson, were teaching at California State University.
