Booking period just added to Ancestry & Innovation: African American Art from the American Folk Art Museum

The Man Rode Past His Barn To Another New Day, 1994–1995 Did you miss out on the opportunity to book this highly acclaimed exhibition? Then you’ll be pleased to know that we have just added an additional booking period to the tour, from November 7, 2009- January 17, 2010.

Hailed by The New York Times when the exhibition debuted at the American Folk Art Museum, art critic Margo Jefferson noted: “An elegant show that also points up the complex union of traditions and individual talents. Here are quilts, paintings and sculptures from three generations of artists. Happily, institutions and individuals are deciding to throw out the old debates about the relative values of art designated fine, folk, high, or utilitarian. The point is to understand each tradition. The point is to open one's eyes to any artist who, as Joseph Conrad said, can make us hear, feel and above all see.”

The ongoing contribution of self-taught black artists to American visual culture is celebrated in this exhibition featuring works from the American Folk Art Museum. Ancestry & Innovation juxtaposes complex and vibrant quilts with paintings and sculpture by an elder generation of creators as well as contemporary masters and emerging artists. This is a great opportunity for your museum to exhibit works by Sam Doyle, David Butler, Bessie Harvey, Clementine Hunter, Thornton Dial Sr., Kevin Sampson and Willie LeRoy Elliott, among others.
This exhibition has been made possible by MetLife Foundation.
